Winter Wedding Tips
Winter is a magical time of year for a marriage. If you're planning your own or thinking of a winter wedding, here's some top tips on how to make your day extra special from our wonderful Group Weddings Manager, Sarah Light.
Embrace the winter weather!
Unlike couples choosing spring or summer wedding dates where there is an assumption and usually a real hidden hope for sunshine, outdoor drinks receptions and long warm evenings, when the winter weather starts to draw in there is safety and a certain guarantee that they don’t have to worry about the weather so much and that expectation and worry usually disappears. Winter couples tend to be much more settled that everything will be hosted indoors, allowing energy to be focused on other things like, making it cosy for your guests, extra entertainment, bringing out the wellies for fun photographs, adding extra layers to the dress like a lace overlay which can be removed going into the evening giving the allusion of a different outfit altogether, and not having to worry about indoor back up plans!
Timings & Photos
Once the clocks change, a big thing to remember is to make sure you book your ceremony time with the registry office just that tiny bit earlier than a summer wedding, allowing you enough time to say your I do’s without losing any daylight for those all-important photos!
Unlike summer weddings, the night draws in much earlier meaning everyone is much more ready to hit the dancefloor rather than sitting outside and don’t forget its always perfectly acceptable to end on some big classic Christmas tunes, Mariah Carey is always a wedding favourite.
Candles, candles, candles….oh and extra fairy lights too!
Candles throughout the year are always key to wedding décor and are a cost saving but effective way to finish any theme, bringing everything together, however they come into their own for winter weddings. Layer candles up any venue staircases in different sized lanterns, along aisle ways and in between foliage - there are so many amazing effective LED candles alternatives available to keep everything nice and safe too.
Stringing fairy or festoon lights across your dancefloor can also add evening twinkle!
Why not get your guests to head outside for a spectacular sparkler photo, it’s a great way to fill the time after dinner whilst your venue might be turning spaces around ready for the evening! You could even surprise your guests with a warming tipple of mulled wine or hot cider to enjoy whilst they recreate some childhood fun!
The photos can be a great alternative or even additions to the group daytime confetti photo, with guests all lined up with their sparklers as you and your new husband walk through the lit tunnel.
Cosy and Indulgent
Winter weddings are perfect for embracing cosiness into your day! How about leaving a box of fun blankets on your outside terrace so guests can still enjoy the fresh outdoor space without getting cold, or a selection of colourful wellies left by the front door so guests can head outdoor without ruining their party heels.
Hot chocolate making stations are always a winner……give guests the option to have fun with lots of different toppings (marshmallows, sprinkles, chocolate flakes) and go adult friendly by offering some boozy flavours too…..baileys, contrieu etc.
Most properties offer fire pits to enjoy outdoors in the evening, you could always incorporate a s'mores station too!
Swap the traditional petite fours for truffles served with tea, coffee and mini mince pies, plus winter is the perfect time to add in an extra cheese course to your wedding breakfast too.
